Urinary tract infections are the second most common type of infection in the outpatient setting, after respiratory infections. Women are affected most, and it is estimated that one in three will suffer this type of infection at some time throughout his life. This increased susceptibility is due to the urethra (tube that leads from the bladder to the external orifice) is much shorter, which facilitates the penetration of bacteria.
The infection is most common is known as cystitis, in which germs affect the lower urinary tract (urethra and bladder).
